Q: What is an internship?

A: An internship is a short-term work experience offered by companies for students to gain entry-level exposure in a specific field or industry.

Q: How can APSPIRE WS benefit my student?

A: ASPIRE WS will support your student’s preparation to enter the world of work and help them with plans after high school. Students will gain real-life experience at a local company, in addition to receiving interview practice, resume writing instruction, and attend an employability training course with Greater Winston-Salem, Inc. and our partners at Forsyth Tech. Students can also voluntarily enroll in a dual enrollment Career and College Promise Program course while still in high school.

Q: What is the first step in becoming an intern?

A:  High school juniors and seniors must complete a Career Readiness track either in the Spring or Fall to be eligible for a Summer internship. An internship application and a signed Parental Waiver are required.

Q: When is the internship and for how long?

A: Internships are offered during the Summer. Your student will receive 80-135 hours of work experience during their selected term.

Q: Is transportation provided for the internship program?

A: It is the student’s responsibility to get to and from the work site on time. However, GWSI will work with students to assess transportation needs and identify solutions. During the Fall/Spring Career Readiness program, transportation and meals are provided.

Q: Is this a paid internship?

A: Yes, this is a paid internship program. Your student is guaranteed the hourly rate of $10. The student is a W2 employee of the host company. This is taxable income subject to tax filing requirements.

Q: Who do I contact with additional questions about the program?

A: Reach out to Alesia Hilton, Director of Career Readiness, with Greater Winston-Salem, Inc.
