Q: What is an internship?
A: An internship is a short-term work experience offered by companies for students to gain entry-level exposure in a specific field or industry.
Q: How can ASPIRE WS benefit me?
A: If you are a high school junior or senior, ASPIRE WS will prepare you for the world of work. Not only will you gain real life experience at a local company, but also receive interview practice, resume writing instruction, and attend an employability workshop with our partners at Forsyth Tech. We have your back!
Q: Is ASPIRE WS at my high school?
A: ASPIRE WS currently operates at Carver, Kennedy, North Forsyth, Parkland, and W-S Prep. High schools will be added to the program each academic year, so stay in touch to keep informed about where the program will be next.
Q: When are internships available?
A: Internships are offered in the Summer of every academic year.
Q: Will I be paid?
A: Student interns are guaranteed $10 per hour.
Q: How many hours can I work during an internship?
A: Students will work 80 – 135 hours in an internship term. You and your employer decide your work schedule. This will depend on your availability, company hours of operation, and business needs.
Q: How do I apply?
A: An application and a parental waiver is required to get started. Applications will be used to confirm your eligibility for the program and match you to the best internship opportunity – so it is really important to complete all the questions fully. After you complete the application, your parent or guardian will receive the waiver form by email.
Q: What are the eligibility requirements to become an intern?
A: Students are required to successfully complete the ASPIRE Career Readiness program prior to becoming eligible to apply for internships. Parental consent is required for the Career Readiness program and the internship.
Q: What happens next?
A: You meet with the Talent & Workforce team at Greater Winston-Salem, Inc. We will guide you through the preparation process including the interview sessions with local companies. Employers will then make offers to students to fill internship openings with their organization.
Q: Will ASPIRE WS help me with plans after high school?
A: Absolutely! Like we said, we have your back! ASPIRE WS offers you the opportunity to meet local companies who are seeking top talent to join their teams. In addition to that, ASPIRE WS education partners will guide you to training and curriculum programs that fit your interests, including Forsyth Tech’s Career and College Promise Program. You can even try it out now. Let us know if you are interested in enrolling in a dual enrollment Career and College Promise course while still in high school.
Q: Who can I contact to learn more?
