Air
Smith Reynolds (INT), located about 10 minutes north of downtown Winston-Salem, serves primarily as a corporate aircraft base with hangar space available for lease. Meanwhile, Piedmont Triad International (GSO) is located just off Interstate 40, about 25 minutes east of Winston-Salem. This airport is home to the FedEx Mid-Atlantic Hub and HondaJet headquarters. Construction of a third parallel runway is underway to serve FedEx and jumpstart future airport growth.
Port
Winston-Salem is within 300 miles of major east coast ports including Wilmington, NC; Morehead City, NC; Norfolk, VA; and Charleston, SC. Wilmington is North Carolina’s container port, handling a variety of containerized and break-bulk commodities with 7,000 feet of continuous berthing space. Morehead City handles break-bulk cargo and contains 5,250 feet of lineal berthing space. A ten-acre intermodal facility adjacent to the Piedmont Triad International Airport facilitates international commerce and enhances the region’s access to North Carolina’s deepwater ports.
Rail
Forsyth County is served by three railroads: Norfolk Southern, Winston-Salem Southbound (which connects with CSX South of Charlotte, NC) and Yadkin Valley Railroad. Piggyback service is also available at an intermodal facility by Piedmont Triad International Airport, 25 minutes east of Winston-Salem. A bulk freight transfer station is located in Winston-Salem, allowing companies to receive product via rail and have it trucked to their plant site.
Road
Equidistant from Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, the Piedmont Triad region offers direct access to Interstates I-40, I-77, I-73/74 and I-85. In addition, I-95 is located just under two hours east of the Triad, and I-81 is two hours to the north. The Piedmont Triad is served by a first-rate highway system that includes U.S. highways 52, 158, 311 and 421, and North Carolina primary highways 8, 67, 109, 150, 65 and 66.
