The beginning of Northwest Child Development Council, Inc. dates back to the early months of 1970 when Appalachian Regional Commission funds for childcare became a reality. The North Carolina Office of Economic Development administered and appropriated start-up funding to the northwest region of the state. Local county groups that began to organize, plan, and develop programs to respond to child care needs in a predetermined geographic area, establishing the first official center in 1972.
In 2000 Northwest Child Development Council, Inc., was renamed Northwest Child Development Centers, Inc. (NWCDC), one of the largest non-profit providers of childcare in Forsyth County. Working with families and community advocates, religious leaders, employers, local governmental agencies, public schools, and other institutions in several northwest counties, NWCDC has operated over 36 childcare centers in six adjoining counties since inception. Employees in these centers provide high quality services for children from birth to 5 years, and before and after school care. Other care arrangements include drop-in, summer camp, and special event arrangements. In 2013, NWCDC opened a new state of the art facility, “MudPies Downtown East,” located in Innovation Quarter. In partnership with Hatch Early Learning Company, the facility is equipped with innovative educational technology for preschool children. Community based support has followed the program from conception to the present.
