October is recognized by the Department of Labor as National Disability Employment Awareness Month to advocate for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the workforce.
Headquartered in Winston-Salem, IFB Solutions is the country’s largest employer of people who are blind. IFB Solutions employs about 1,000 people, half of whom are blind or visually impaired.
The nonprofit organization makes combat gear, eyeglasses, mattresses, office products and more for the federal government and commercial customers, and also has retail shops. Glasses purchased at the Twenty200 Eyewear store on Coliseum Drive support jobs for people who are blind. The lenses in those glasses are made in the state-of-the-art optical lab at IFB Solutions.
