Education Overview

The Chamber's Proactive Approach

Having the best educational system in the nation is the Chamber's goal. Excellent K-12 schools, colleges, and universities are critical to economic development and to building a high-tech economy.

The Chamber strongly supports K-12 public schools through myriad programs designed to build social capital through individual business people's involvement in the schools. Social capital refers to the community connectedness among diverse citizens and the community's institutions.

Through the Chamber's K-12 volunteer programs, thousands of business leaders volunteer in our local schools, and hundreds of businesses partner with individual schools to make a difference in our community.

The Chamber's close partnerships with higher education institutions helps synchronize and enhance the curriculm of our colleges and universities.

Since education is a continuous process in today's high-tech economy, all educational institutions in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County are linked to create life-long learning opportunities for all our citizens.

Education initiatives reach far into the community through collaboration with many other organizations. This networking enhances discussion about common concerns and sharing strategies for success that apply in both business and education.  Other education initiatives include:

  • The Chamber partners with the social work department of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, Staples, and others to provide an annual  back-to-school supply drive for teachers and  needy students.
  • The Chamber's Touched by Technology campaign, implemented in partnership with the WS/FC schools, has raised more than $8 million in private funding to increase the availability of technology in the classroom.
  • To identify community needs and seek appropriate funding sources to meet those needs, the Chamber joined with a partnership of non-profits and educational institutions to create the Community Alliance for Education.
